The Easter holidays are the perfect opportunity to get together for some quality time as a family – but thinking of things to do to keep the kids happy can sometimes be a challenge.
That’s where we come in. At Europa Italian Restaurant in Bristol, we know the importance of getting together with the ones you love – whether it’s to share a family meal or cook a favourite recipe at home.
So to help you celebrate Easter the Italian way, we’ve put together five fun-filled ideas for family-friendly activities. Food is never far from our minds at Europa so,with Easter in mind, all the activities have one thing in common – eggs!
Get out your paintbrushes
Just like here in the UK, Easter in Italy isn’t complete without chocolate eggs. However, hard-boiled eggs also play an important part in Italian Easter tradition. Every year, families get together to paint the shells of eggs using food colouring. These are then given as gifts on Easter Sunday. It’s a great way for older and younger generations to enjoy some time together.
Why not have a competition to see who can come up with the most creative design for their egg? The prize can be a chocolate version. Or, if you don’t mind a bit of a mess, let the kids have an egg fight, like some of our staff did in our latest video…
Do some colouring in
Colouring in isn’t just for kids! Many adults now love it too so this is an activity that’s sure to keep everyone busy (and quiet!) for a while. You could even use the finished works of art to make some Easter cards to give to family and friends.
Bread is an important part of every Italian meal and in Italy it’s popular at this time of year to make ‘pane di pasqua’ – ‘Easter bread’ that’s made by twisting bread dough into a circle then placing a painted boiled egg in the centre.
Our head chef Pietro makes fresh dough for our authentic bread and pizzas every morning – and it’s one of the reasons we’re known as one of the best Italian restaurants in Bristol. To celebrate Easter, we’re giving away our recipe so that you can enjoy either some ‘pane di pasqua’ or a freshly-made egg-shaped pizza at home. We guarantee the kids will love decorating (and eating) their creations.
Cook up a carbonara
Simple, creamy and delicious, spaghetti carbonara is a traditional Italian dish that’s popular with all the family. It’s certainly a hit on our menu (and priced at just £8.75 as a main course it makes eating out a family affordable, too).
It’s easy to make, so the kids can get involved, and with eggs as a key ingredient, it’s a great Easter-themed alternative to roast lamb.
Whip up a zabaglione
Every Italian feast deserves to be finished off with something sweet. One of the favourites in our family is zabaglione. Chances are, you’ve never heard of it – but this simple dessert can be whipped up in no time and it’s a great treat once you’re tired of all that chocolate. Like with all our dishes, we use a traditional Italian recipe, which you can download here. Remember, though, if you’re making it for the kids then skip the booze (or put a couple of boozy ones to one side for when the kids are in bed!).
Of course, if you just want to relax this Easter, we’d love you to join us for a family meal at Europa, known as one of the best Italian restaurants in Bristol. Just book online or give us a call on 0117 929 7818.
